How to Plan a Wedding You'll Never Regret

One thing I've noticed after helping hundreds of couples celebrate over the past 20+ years is that many couples think there's a "right" way to have a wedding.

There isn't.

It's your wedding.

I think a lot of couples feel like they have to follow a script because that's what weddings are "supposed" to look like. The truth is, the best weddings I've been part of aren't the ones that followed every tradition. They're the ones that reflected the couple.

I remember one couple who told me they didn't want to be introduced into the reception. Instead, after I welcomed everyone, I simply invited them onto the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife.

It was perfect.

Not because it was different, but because it was exactly what they wanted. Nobody walked away thinking something was missing because the reception felt authentic to them.

That's how I approach every wedding.

I'll explain what a traditional reception usually looks like and why things are often done in a certain order. Then we'll talk about what you like, what you don't like, and what feels right for the two of you. My job isn't to tell you what to do. It's to help you understand your options so you can make decisions you'll be happy with.

If there's one piece of advice I could give every engaged couple, it's this:

Decide what's most important to you before you start making decisions.

Then ask yourselves:

"What has to happen for us to look back and know we got exactly what we wanted?"

Once you answer that question, everything becomes easier.

You'll know where to spend your money.

You'll know which traditions to keep and which ones to skip.

You'll know what to tell your vendors.

You'll be planning your wedding—not someone else's.

I always try to help couples see the possibilities, believe they can create the wedding they want, and then put together a plan to make it happen.

If you make your decisions based on what's most important to you—not what everyone else thinks—you'll never regret the wedding you created.
