How to Choose the Right Wedding DJ

If You've Talked to Three DJs and They All Seem Good, Read This First

One of the questions I get asked all the time is:

"We've met with a few DJs. They all seem good. How do we choose?"

It's a fair question because, on the surface, a lot of DJs look very similar.

If you've seen one of them perform and you loved what you saw, that's a great place to start.

If someone you trust referred them because they had an amazing experience, that's valuable too.

But if you've never seen any of them perform, then I think the decision comes down to something much bigger than packages and equipment.

Choose the person you trust to help create the wedding you actually want.

To me, that means finding someone who understands what's most important to you, makes you feel heard, and gives you confidence that they can deliver the celebration you're imagining.

If I'm being completely honest, if you can't tell the difference between the DJs you're talking with, you could probably flip a coin.

That's the God's honest truth.

The problem is, you usually don't know the difference until something unexpected happens. That's when experience, preparation, communication, and good decision-making really matter. Unfortunately, by then, it's too late to change your mind.

If you're still unsure, look at what past couples have to say. Reviews won't tell you everything, but they can give you a better picture of how someone communicates, how they handled the planning process, and how couples felt after the wedding was over.

If my daughter were getting married, I'd tell her to look at the value each DJ offers for the price, choose someone she genuinely connects with, and make sure they understand exactly what she and her fiancé want their wedding to feel like. I'd also encourage her to share the music they love, the music they don't, and then trust an experienced DJ to build on that throughout the night.

One thing my wife told me over 20 years ago has stayed with me ever since.

She said, "Women think about their wedding from the time they're little girls. The last thing they want is some DJ to mess it up."

I've never forgotten that.

Every time I walk into a wedding, I feel a responsibility to help that couple have one of the best days of their lives. That's how I approach every celebration, and I believe every professional should feel that same responsibility.

At the end of the day, don't just hire a DJ.

Choose the person you'd trust with one of the biggest days of your life.

Every couple is different. If you'd like to talk through your plans or have questions about choosing the right DJ, I'd be happy to help.
