Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Wedding DJ
Before you make a list of questions, start with this one.
"How are you going to take our vision and bring it to life?"
I think that's the most important question you can ask a wedding DJ.
Most DJs can tell you how many weddings they've done, what equipment they use, whether they offer uplighting or a photo booth, and what's included in their package.
Those are all fair questions.
But they don't really tell you what it'll be like to have that person standing beside you on one of the biggest days of your life.
What you really want to know is:
Do they understand what matters most to us, and can they help us create that experience?
Everything else starts there.
Ask questions that reveal the person, not just the package.
When couples compare DJs, they're often comparing very similar services.
Five hours of DJ/MC.
Ceremony coverage.
Uplighting.
A photo station.
The packages can look almost identical on paper.
The mistake I see is when the conversation becomes all about features and price.
Instead, I'd encourage you to ask questions that help you understand the person behind the package.
Questions like:
* How would you describe your style?
* How do you personalize a wedding instead of playing the same songs every weekend?
* How do you work with photographers, planners, and the venue?
* What do you do if something unexpected happens?
* How do you keep the dance floor going without making the wedding feel over the top?
Those answers will tell you far more than a list of equipment ever will.
Listen for how they think.
If someone asked me to describe my style, I'd say I'm fun, upbeat, and professional—but I'm not trying to become the centerpiece of the reception.
You are.
I'm not the DJ dancing on top of the booth or making constant announcements just to get attention.
If the music is doing its job, I don't have to.
My job is to bring the right energy at the right time, help the evening flow naturally, and create moments that feel effortless.
Here's a question people ask me all the time.
"How do you keep the dance floor packed?"
The truth?
If the bride and groom are on the dance floor, the dance floor will be packed. Period.
From there, my job is to take the music you've told me you love, stay away from the music you don't, read the room throughout the night, and fill in the gaps with songs I know have worked time and time again.
Not because they're predictable.
Because they're the right songs for that moment.
No two DJs are the same.
Let's pretend two DJs have the exact same equipment.
The same music library.
The same lighting.
The same package.
They're still not the same.
They'll communicate differently.
They'll work with your vendors differently.
They'll handle pressure differently.
They'll interact with your guests differently.
And they'll create a different experience.
That's why I believe the best way to choose a wedding DJ isn't by comparing packages.
It's by having a conversation.
That's where you'll discover whether someone truly understands your vision and whether you trust them to bring it to life.
At the end of the day, don't just ask what a DJ includes.
Ask how they'll help create the wedding you'll remember for the rest of your life.
