As a wedding DJ and MC, I've worked a number of weddings at Willowdale Estate. I put these guides together to share some helpful information about venues I know firsthand.
My Experience at Willowdale Estate
Willowdale Estate has a really nice mix of rustic and elegant. The old fieldstone house, woodwork and smaller interior rooms give it a lot of character, and then everything opens up out back into the gardens and tent.
During tent season, the ceremony is often held outside in the garden courtyard, followed by cocktail hour in and around the mansion before guests move into the tent for dinner and dancing. I like that the tent connects right back to the house, so even though the day moves through a few different spaces, it still feels like one event.
I’ve also done weddings there completely indoors during the colder months, with the ceremony in the conservatory, cocktail hour moving into the North Wing, and dinner and dancing staying inside the mansion. It gives Willowdale a very different feel depending on the season.
From a DJ and MC standpoint, the biggest thing for me is how naturally the day flows. Guests aren’t being moved somewhere that feels disconnected from what just happened. Once everyone gets into the tent or Great Room for dancing, the room can build energy pretty quickly because everyone still feels close to the action.
It feels very New England without feeling overly formal, and the combination of the mansion, grounds and tent gives couples a lot of flexibility depending on the season, weather and size of the wedding.
