As a wedding DJ and MC, I've worked a number of weddings at Smith Barn at Brooksby Farm. I put these guides together to share some helpful information about venues I know firsthand.
My Experience at Smith Barn
One of the things that makes Smith Barn different is that the wedding can really use two sides of the property.
If the weather cooperates, the ceremony is typically held in the Woodland Gardens behind the historic house across the street from the barn. It feels private and tucked away, and then after the ceremony everyone makes their way across to the barn for cocktail hour and the reception.
Once you get to the barn, it has exactly the feel you would expect — exposed beams, big barn doors and a lot of character. Cocktail hour can spill outside when the weather is nice, which I really like because guests can move in and out without feeling disconnected from what’s happening inside.

The upstairs loft is another thing that makes Smith Barn unique. Depending on the size and setup of the wedding, some guests can be seated upstairs overlooking the main floor and dance floor. It gives photographers and videographers some really cool angles, and it also gives guests upstairs a completely different view of the party once the dancing starts.
From my perspective as the DJ and MC, that two-level setup is something I pay attention to. You want the people upstairs to still feel connected to everything happening downstairs, especially during introductions, speeches and once the dance floor opens.
Smith Barn has a very different feel from a ballroom or country club. It’s rustic, close-knit and has a lot of personality — and when the barn doors are open and the dance floor is going, it can be a really fun room.
